Why Newborn Sessions Are Best Between 8–20 Days | Orlando Newborn Photographer

One of the questions I receive most often from expecting parents is:

"When is the best time to schedule newborn photos?"

The short answer is between 8 and 20 days after birth.

While beautiful images can absolutely be created with older babies, those first two to three weeks are considered the ideal window for traditional posed newborn photography. During this time, babies are typically sleepier, curl naturally into the womb-like poses parents love, and are often more comfortable being gently repositioned throughout the session.

Why Are the First Few Weeks So Special?

During their first days of life, newborns spend much of their time sleeping deeply. This allows me to create those peaceful, sleepy portraits that many parents envision when planning their newborn session.

As babies grow, they gradually become more alert and curious about the world around them. While those bright eyes are wonderful to photograph, older newborns may be less interested in sleeping through multiple poses and transitions.

Every baby is unique, but photographing them between 8 and 20 days old generally gives us the greatest variety of images while always following their comfort and cues.

Those Tiny Curled-Up Poses

One of the reasons parents love newborn photography is because it captures just how tiny their baby was.

During the first couple of weeks, babies naturally prefer to keep their arms and legs tucked close to their bodies, much like they were in the womb. These gentle curled-up positions help create the timeless images many families treasure for years to come.

As babies continue growing, they naturally begin stretching out more and becoming increasingly active.

A Calm and Baby-Led Experience

Many parents worry that newborn sessions might be stressful for their baby.

In reality, every session is completely baby-led.

I allow plenty of time for feeding, cuddling, diaper changes, and comforting whenever needed. There is never any rush. My goal is always to create a calm, relaxed environment where your baby's comfort and safety come first.

Some babies sleep through nearly the entire session, while others need a few extra snuggles—and that's perfectly okay.

What If My Baby Is Older Than 20 Days?

Don't worry!

Although the first few weeks are ideal for traditional posed newborn portraits, beautiful photographs can still be created after that window.

Older newborns often spend more time awake, allowing us to capture beautiful eye contact, curious expressions, and meaningful family connections.

Every stage is worth remembering.

I have photographed many babies who were several weeks old—and even older newborns who spent time in the NICU—with wonderful results. Every session is thoughtfully adapted to the baby's age, comfort, and individual needs.

The Best Time to Book Your Session

Because babies rarely arrive exactly on their due date, I recommend booking your newborn session during your second or third trimester.

When you reserve your session before your baby arrives, I will tentatively schedule your due date on my calendar. Once your little one is born, we'll simply adjust the session date to fall within that ideal 8–20 day window whenever possible.

Planning ahead helps ensure availability while giving us the flexibility every newborn session requires.

Preserving These Fleeting Moments

The newborn stage passes more quickly than most parents expect.

Tiny fingers wrapped around yours.

Soft little eyelashes.

Sleepy smiles.

Delicate yawns.

The way your baby fits perfectly in your hands.

These details change so much in just a few short weeks.

My goal is to preserve these memories through timeless photographs that you'll treasure for years to come.

If you're expecting and looking for an Orlando newborn photographer, I'd love to help you create beautiful memories of this incredible season. I specialize in both studio-style in-home newborn photography and lifestyle newborn sessions throughout Orlando and the surrounding Central Florida communities, providing a relaxed experience in the comfort of your own home.
